SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION
DEPT
If you've bought only one latin compilation cd in the last five years,
there's a good chance it was on the Union Square group of labels -
Manteca, Metro, or Ocho. And if you buy their Brazilian comps, there's
an even greater chance that they're mine! NU BRAZIL VOL 2 (MANTECA)
covers a lot of new ground over 28 titles, a few artists of whom you'll
have heard of but quite a number that you probably won't know unless
you'ree a hardcore Brazilian collector. Hope you enjoy it.
Also worthy and recent on Manteca: 'NU TANGO'. Argentinian compiler
Pablo Farba has really come up with a winner here. OK, Gotan Project
make a predictable appearance, and several of the countless Astor
Piazzolla dance remixes are there, but the real gems are the Bajofondo
Tango Club, Adriana Varela, Daniel Melingo, La Camorra and La Chicana,
whose solo records are all but impossible to find outside of Buenos
Aires. Proof that 'Nu' doesn't have to be shorthand for 'electronic
chill/dance/drum and bass'.
On Manteca's sister label 'Sessions', pick up 'Afrobeat Sessions'
as good a compilation of both classic rare-groove and revivalist Afrobeat
from Nigeria and Ghana as you'll find anywhere - not surprisingly,
coming as it does from compiler Quinton Scott, he of legendary and
late-lamented Strut Records fame.
